Bayern Munich vs Ajax in Nairobi: what the new stadium's opening match means
Two of Europe's biggest clubs will open Kenya's new 60,000-seat national stadium on 5 January 2027, months before AFCON.

President William Ruto announced on 28 October 2026 that Bayern Munich and Ajax will play the first match at the new Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi, formerly known as Talanta Stadium, on 5 January 2027.
The stadium in numbers
- 60,000 seats, at Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road.
- Kenya's first stadium built specifically for football and rugby.
- A hybrid pitch, 52 skyboxes, VAR and goal-line technology.
- About 94% complete, according to updates given to Parliament.
Why the opening match matters
- A full rehearsal for AFCON. The stadium is the centrepiece of Kenya's hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations in June and July 2027. A sold-out January match tests gates, security, transport and broadcasting months before the tournament.
- Global attention. Two famous European clubs bring international cameras and fans, a showcase for Nairobi as a venue for big events.
- Life after the final. Big stadiums only pay off if they keep hosting matches, concerts and events. A strong start helps build that calendar.
