Kenyans in the Gulf: what the Middle East conflict means for workers and their families

About half a million Kenyans live and work in the Middle East. Here is what is happening, and practical steps for them and their families at home.

In March 2026, the government told Parliament that about 500,000 Kenyans live in the Middle East, most of them in Saudi Arabia.

What has changed

  • Since the US–Israel war with Iran began in February 2026, Iran has struck US bases and infrastructure in several Gulf countries, including airports and oil facilities.
  • In October, Houthi missiles and drones hit Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport three days in a row. At least 14 people were killed, and several airlines cancelled flights.
  • On 15 October, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi condemned the attacks in a call with Saudi Arabia's deputy foreign minister and expressed Kenya's solidarity.

What the government has done

  • Set up a multi-agency committee working with Kenya's ambassadors in affected countries.
  • Issued travel advisories and opened emergency communication channels.
  • Urged Kenyans in the region to register on the government's diaspora portal (DIIMS) so they can be located and helped in an emergency.

As of March 2026, no evacuation had been announced; the government said it was monitoring the situation.

Practical steps for workers and families

  1. Register on the diaspora portal and keep the nearest Kenyan embassy's emergency number saved.
  2. Keep copies of documents, passport, visa and work contract, on your phone and with family at home.
  3. Agree a check-in plan with family: a time and app to message, and what to do if you cannot reach each other.
  4. Before travelling, check your airline and the latest advisory, as flights to some Gulf cities have been cancelled at short notice.
  5. Beware of scams promising quick evacuation or new jobs for a fee. Use only official channels and licensed recruitment agencies.
