Kenya's military strength in 2026: how big is the KDF, what does it cost, and where does it serve?

The Kenya Defence Forces rank 12th in Africa on the 2026 Global Firepower index, with about 50,000 active troops and a budget of about KSh252 billion this year. Here is what Kenya has, what it spends, and what the military is for.

Kenya is not at war with any neighbour, but it keeps one of East Africa's best-equipped militaries. The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have three services: the Kenya Army, the Kenya Air Force and the Kenya Navy.

About these numbers: Global Firepower is a private index built from public sources; it estimates some figures where governments do not publish them. Treat it as a rough guide to size, not a measure of how well a force would fight.

Who ranks above Kenya in Africa?

Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Sudan, Tunisia and Libya. In East Africa, Kenya ranks below Ethiopia (5th) and DR Congo (8th), and just ahead of Tanzania (14th) and Uganda (19th). See Kenya vs Uganda, compared.

What the KDF actually does

  1. Defend borders and the coast. Kenya borders Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania, and has a long Indian Ocean coastline to patrol against piracy and smuggling.
  2. Fight al-Shabaab. Kenyan troops entered Somalia in 2011 and now serve in the African Union mission there (AUSSOM), mainly in the south around Kismayo.
  3. Help at home. The KDF supports disaster response and has taken on civilian projects, including supervising construction of the new Talanta stadium.
  4. Train with partners. In 2026 Kenya signed defence cooperation agreements with Türkiye and Angola, works with India on maritime security, and hosted the multinational exercise Ushirikiano Imara.

Building at home

Kenya wants to make more of its own equipment. The Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation supplies the KDF, and this year's budget sets aside KSh13.1 billion for defence industrialisation. The National Land Commission is also acquiring land for a proposed air base in Wajir, in the north-east.

Why it matters to you

  • It is a big public expense. Security as a whole is one of the largest items in the national budget, second only to education.
  • Regional stability means trade. Peace in Somalia and safe shipping lanes protect Mombasa port and the jobs that depend on it.
  • Recruitment. KDF recruitment drives attract thousands of young Kenyans each year. Only apply through official KDF announcements; recruitment is free.
