The 5% creator tax: what YouTube, Meta and TikTok now deduct from Kenyan creators, and what to do
From October 2026 payouts, Google withholds 5% of Kenyan creators' YouTube earnings for KRA, and Meta applies the same rate. Here is how it works, what happens without a KRA PIN, and how creators can avoid paying twice.

If you earn from YouTube, Facebook or Instagram in Kenya, your payouts now come with a deduction. Platforms are collecting a 5% withholding tax on behalf of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) before the money reaches you.
Platform by platform
| Platform | What is happening |
|---|---|
| YouTube (Google AdSense) | 5% withheld every month from finalised earnings, starting with September 2026 earnings paid in October 2026. Creators had to enter and verify their KRA PIN in AdSense by 1 October 2026. |
| Meta (Facebook, Instagram) | 5% withholding on payments to Kenyan creators, according to reports. |
| TikTok | Has asked Kenyan creators to submit their tax information so it can set their tax status. No rate or start date has been confirmed publicly. |
What it means in shillings
On KSh100,000 of finalised YouTube revenue, 5% is withheld, leaving KSh95,000 before any other deductions. Google also sends KRA monthly reports with each creator's gross earnings, tax withheld, address and PIN.
Is 5% the whole tax?
Not necessarily. Withholding tax is collected in advance. You may still need to declare all your income in your annual KRA return. The 5% already withheld should count as a credit against what you owe, so keep your monthly statements.
Why creators are upset
- YouTube already keeps a share of ad revenue (about 45%), and US tax withholding can apply too.
- Small creators say the paperwork of claiming credits across two countries is hard without an accountant.
- The Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya has called for the 5% tax to be suspended.
Checklist for creators
- Get a KRA PIN if you don't have one, and add it to AdSense and other platforms that ask.
- Download monthly payout statements showing tax withheld.
- File your annual return and claim the withholding as a credit.
- Track all income: brand deals, tips and affiliate links are taxable too.
