What are the Youth Olympic Games?
- An Olympic event for young athletes, usually aged 15 to 18, held every four years.
- Dakar 2026 runs from 31 October to 13 November 2026 and is the first Olympic event ever held in Africa.
- Rugby sevens is one of 25 sports on the programme.
Why it matters
- Women's rugby is growing. A gold over Australia, one of the sport's powerhouses, is a big boost for girls' rugby in Kenyan schools and clubs.
- The next generation. Youth Olympians often become senior stars. Several of these players could be future Kenya Lionesses at the World Series and the Olympics.
- Sport as national pride. Kenya is best known for athletics. Success in team sports helps build new pathways, sponsorship and facilities. See the new Talanta stadium.
